Overview

What this course is

TOEFL passages and lectures are drawn from first-year university textbooks, so they circle a handful of recurring fields: geology, biology, astronomy, art history, anthropology. Learning vocabulary by field works far better than working through a frequency list, because a lecture uses the whole cluster belonging to its field rather than scattered individual words. The course also covers the SIGNPOSTING words of academic style — the group that belongs to no field but appears in every text, and the group that lets you follow a lecturer's argument after you have missed a sentence.
