TOEFL iBT measures academic English and is the certificate most widely used by universities in the United States. The whole paper is taken on a computer.
The four points below describe the CURRENT paper — the shortened version, which also replaced the old independent essay with a different task.
Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing are sat in one continuous run, considerably shorter than the previous paper.
One independent task and three integrated ones — read, listen, then report back. All spoken into a microphone on a countdown.
The old independent essay has been replaced by Writing for an Academic Discussion — a single response to a classroom discussion thread.
Each section is worth 0–30. Many universities set a minimum on individual sections as well as the total, so none can be neglected.

Destinations
Countries that accept this certificate in an admissions file. A qualifying score is the first step — the rest is tuition, paperwork and scholarships.
The largest university system in the world, with two years of general education before you declare a major. Tuition is the highest of the seven destinations, but so is the volume of institutional aid.
The same time zone as Vietnam, a large Vietnamese community and clear rules on part-time work. Living costs are high, but so are casual wages.
Lower tuition than the US or the UK at a comparable standard, plus a clear post-graduation immigration path. The trade-off is a long, hard winter across most provinces.
Three-year bachelor's and one-year master's degrees — the shortest of the seven destinations, so the total cost of a degree is lower than the annual tuition suggests.
The lowest IELTS threshold of the seven destinations, and all eight universities are public. The small scale means smaller classes and closer contact with lecturers.
The lowest living costs of the seven destinations and moderate tuition, with university scholarships that offset fees for strong non-EU applicants.
